Basti Vishwa Swasthya Ayurved

What is Basti ?

Basti is a simple procedure like an enema. Basti is the process of administering drugs into the large intestine through the anus for the sake of performing variety of treatments. Basti is considered as half treatment of diseases. i.e. it can cure half of the illnesses of human lives.

Rainy Season and Basti:

The season has changed, summer is over, and the rains have started. Your appetite suddenly decreased, and your need for water decreased. But we did not changed anything. We kept eating as much as before, and same about much also. As a result, many people got diarrhea as the body expelled excess through diarrhea. Many people vomited as a result. Some of them survived. Not everyone was lucky enough to get cleared with vomiting or diarrhea. They got constipation, bloating, stomach ache, bad taste in mouth, Food started digesting late, many of them started feeling very tired. Some even demanded a tonic. Many suffer from headaches, body aches, and joint pains. Many had urticarial rashes on their skin, People with asthma started getting symptoms like dyspnea, cough. As the Rain, they lost their happiness.

The important question is, what is the cure? As per the principals of Ayurveda, Basti is the only medicine for all sorrows in this season. I had read in a book, ‘Whose stomach is clean, he is free from all diseases’ ( पेट साफ़ तो सब रोग् माफ़ I ).

Panchakarma is divided into three seasons of the year. Virechan and Raktamokshan these two Panchakarmas are to be done in autumn (Sharad Rhutu), Vaman Panchakarma in spring (Vasant Rhutu). But now there is no reason to rejoice in the memory of purification done inthese past seasons, to live in goodness; The present Panchakarma is…Basti !!!

Those whose stomach is not cleansed properly. They are prone to suffer from various ailments like constipation, urinary complaints, vaginal diseases, menstrual disorders, bloating, back pain, acid reflux, headache, cold, hemorrhoids etc. The only cure for all these ailments is Basti.

Of the five types of Vat (Vayu) Dosh, “Apan vayu” resides in the rectum and circulates through the hips, bladder, penis and thighs; and controls the excretion of sperm, menstruation, feces, urine, and fetus. Although vata works body-wide the headquarter of vat is large intestine.

Do Basti and Enema are the same?

No. Basti is compared with ‘Enema’ in modern medicine due to similarity in the performance of Procedure. But Basti and Enema are different. This is because ‘Enema’ is used only to get rid of hard feces. On the other hand, Ayurvedic Basti is expected to perform not only get rid of hard feces but also many other useful medical functions.

Many drugs can be administered into the body through the colon for doing detoxification, pacification of Doshas, get rid of hard feces, for weight gain, weight loss, to cure GIT diseases, in  the treatment of Infertility, to prevent aging, to gain strength, to improve complexion of skin. Basti is main treatment for vat dosha.
